Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Çatalhöyük is a Neolithic town with no streets: people entered their homes through the roof and lived in densely packed rooms decorated with wall paintings, bull horns and burials. It changes the way you picture the first cities.

Çatalhöyük is one of the earliest known large Neolithic settlements, with houses built against each other and entered from the roof. The reconstructed house and the visitor centre help explain what survives as low mud-brick walls. It is a short drive from Konya and works well as a half-day stop.
