Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

The historic peninsula holds Roman streets, Byzantine churches, Ottoman palaces and bazaars in a single walkable layer. Hagia Sophia, Topkapı and the city walls are not separate monuments; they are chapters of the same imperial story.

The World Heritage area covers the peninsula’s monumental core rather than a single building. Start at the Hippodrome and Hagia Sophia, continue to Topkapı and the Archaeological Museums, then walk down to the Grand Bazaar. The city walls and the Süleymaniye complex are often quieter and just as rewarding.
