Places to start with

A short list for a first trip. It is not a ranking, and each province page has more.

01

Göbeklitepe

Şanlıurfa

A Neolithic hilltop sanctuary of T-shaped limestone pillars, built around 9600 BCE. Its carved animals and arranged enclosures changed how archaeologists think about the origins of monumental religion.

02

Ephesus

İzmir

A major Roman city on the Aegean coast, with the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and a network of streets that still show how a port city worked. The Terrace Houses add a rare look at domestic life.

03

Hagia Sophia

İstanbul

Built in the 6th century under Justinian, Hagia Sophia was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years. Its dome, mosaics and layered history make it one of Istanbul's defining monuments.

04

Pamukkale

Denizli

White travertine terraces formed by mineral-rich springs, with the Roman city of Hierapolis above them. The site combines geology, ancient streets and one of the region's most unusual landscapes.

05

Mount Nemrut

Adıyaman

The tomb-sanctuary of King Antiochus I of Commagene, set on a mountain top at over 2,000 metres. Colossal stone heads of gods and rulers face the sunrise and sunset, a strange and memorable sight.

06

Sumela Monastery

Trabzon

A Greek Orthodox monastery built into a cliff above the Altındere valley, founded in the 4th century and rebuilt in the 13th. The setting and the frescoed chapel make it one of the Black Sea's most dramatic sites.

07

Ani

Kars

A medieval Armenian city on the border with Armenia, once a major trading centre on the Silk Road. Its churches, walls and mosque stand in an open plateau, giving the ruins a strong sense of distance and history.

08

Ölüdeniz

Muğla

A sheltered blue lagoon backed by pine-covered mountains, famous for its colour and for paragliding from Babadağ. The beach and the Lycian Way make it a natural stop on the Turquoise Coast.

09

Safranbolu

Karabük

An Ottoman town of timber-framed houses, cobbled streets and a preserved bazaar. Its architecture shows how a prosperous Anatolian trading town looked, and the old quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

10

Mardin Old Town

Mardin

A stone city above the Mesopotamian plain, with carved facades, domes and a maze of lanes. Churches, mosques and monasteries sit close together, reflecting the region's layered religious history.

11

Aspendos

Antalya

A Roman theatre in Pamphylia, built in the 2nd century and still remarkably intact. Its acoustics and stage building are among the best preserved in the Roman world.

12

Ishak Pasha Palace

Ağrı

An 18th-century Ottoman palace below Mount Ararat, mixing Seljuk, Ottoman and Caucasian decorative styles. Its position above the Doğubayazıt plain makes it one of eastern Anatolia's most photographed buildings.
