Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Wind and volcanic ash made the cones, ridges and caves of Cappadocia; people carved churches, homes and whole underground towns into them. The result is a lived-in landscape where geology and Byzantine wall painting sit in the same frame.

The Göreme Open Air Museum is the clearest introduction: rock-cut churches with frescoes, refectories and hermit cells within a short walk. Beyond it, the valleys around Uçhisar, Çavuşin and Zelve reward a full day of walking. Balloon flights are weather-dependent, so plan a spare morning rather than a single attempt.
