Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Xanthos was the capital of Lycia and Letoon its sacred sanctuary. The site shows how a local culture kept its language and burial customs through changing administrations.

Xanthos was the capital of Lycia, and the nearby sanctuary of Letoon was its religious centre. The two sites are usually visited together; the Xanthos theatre and inscribed pillar are the highlights, while Letoon’s foundations sit beside a small lake. A car is the practical way to combine them.
