Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

A group of medieval mosques from Afyonkarahisar to Kastamonu share timber columns, carved ceilings and a village-scale intimacy. They are easy to miss and hard to forget, especially in winter light.

This serial site covers five medieval Anatolian mosques whose prayer halls are supported by wooden columns: Afyon, Sivrihisar, Kastamonu, Konya and Beyşehir. Each is still a working mosque, so visit outside prayer times and dress modestly. The scattered locations make it a route for travellers with a car rather than a single stop.
