Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Mimar Sinan built the Selimiye in Edirne when he was in his eighties, and called it his masterpiece. The dome is the point: a single, light-filled space that pulls the whole complex around it.

Selimiye is Mimar Sinan’s crowning work, built for Sultan Selim II in Edirne. The dome and the four slender minarets are best seen from the courtyard; inside, look at the tilework and the central prayer space. Edirne’s old town, the bazaar and the Meriç river are within walking distance.
