Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Sardis was the capital of Lydia, the kingdom credited with early coinage. The Temple of Artemis and the Bin Tepe tumuli sit in a landscape that explains how wealth, trade and burial display worked in western Anatolia.

Sardis was the capital of Lydia and the place where coinage is thought to have been standardized. The Temple of Artemis, the Roman gymnasium and the royal tumuli at Bin Tepe are the main elements, with the landscape around them as important as the ruins. A car is useful; the site is usually visited from İzmir or Manisa.
