Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Pergamon was a Hellenistic royal capital with a library, a steep theatre and a famous healing sanctuary. The landscape around it, acropolis, lower city, Asklepion and tumuli, is part of what makes the site legible.

Pergamon’s acropolis sits on a steep hill above Bergama, with a theater, the library site and the altar foundations. The Asclepion, the ancient healing sanctuary, lies lower down and is often quieter. The cable car and the hilltop paths make the climb easier, but allow time for the heat.
