Overview
UNESCO sites and what they mean
On a mountain top in Adıyaman, King Antiochus I of Commagene built a tomb-sanctuary and lined it with colossal statues of gods, eagles and lions. The heads now sit apart from their bodies, which makes the sunrise visit feel stranger and more theatrical.
The summit is a tomb sanctuary built for King Antiochus I, with colossal stone heads facing the sunrise and sunset terraces. The climb is short but steep, and the best light comes early. Weather can close the road in winter, so check access before setting out.
