Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Hattuşa was the capital of a Bronze Age empire that negotiated with Egypt and wrote its archives in cuneiform. The lion gate, the great temple and the sloping walls still make the scale of that state easy to feel.

Hattuşa is a large archaeological landscape, not a single ruin. The Lion Gate, the Great Temple and the royal acropolis are linked by walking tracks; Yazılıkaya, a short drive away, holds the sanctuary’s rock reliefs. Carry water and sun protection, and allow at least half a day.
