Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Gordion was the capital of Phrygia and the place usually linked to King Midas. Its Great Tumulus and the layered city beneath it are a reminder that the famous legends of Anatolia sit on real, excavated ground.

Gordion was the capital of Phrygia, and its royal tombs include the great wooden burial chamber known as the Midas Mound. The site’s museum explains the tumuli, the citadel and the famous Gordion knot story. It is an easy stop on the road between Ankara and Eskişehir.
