Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Göbeklitepe is a 9,600-year-old monumental site built by hunter-gatherers before farming, pottery or writing. The T-shaped pillars and animal reliefs are not a proto-city; they are evidence that ritual and community came first.

Göbeklitepe is a Neolithic ritual site of T-shaped limestone pillars carved with animal reliefs, older than Stonehenge and the pyramids. The covered excavation area is compact, but the scale of the site’s meaning is not; take the shuttle from the visitor centre and allow time for the museum. It is easily combined with Şanlıurfa’s old town.
