Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Ephesus is the most complete Roman city in the region: a library facade, a theatre for 24,000 people, terrace houses, latrines and streets polished by feet. It is crowded for a reason; go early and walk past the first square.

Ephesus is the most complete classical city in Türkiye: the Library of Celsus, the Great Theater and the marble streets are the familiar highlights. The Terrace Houses, covered by a protective roof, show how wealthy Ephesians lived. Go early to avoid both heat and cruise-ship crowds.
