Overview
UNESCO sites and what they mean
Safranbolu is an Ottoman market town that kept its timber houses, cobbled lanes and guild bazaar. It is not a museum village: people still live in the old houses, which is exactly why it works.
Safranbolu preserves a dense collection of Ottoman town houses, along with a bazaar, mosques and a hammam. The old town is best explored on foot; the hillside houses reward a slow look at their timber frames and plastered facades. It is an easy stop between Ankara and the Black Sea coast.
