Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Troy is nine cities stacked on one hill above the Dardanelles. Homer made it famous, but the archaeology is better than the legend: walls, ramps, houses and a defensive ditch that show how a real trading city worked.

Troy is a layered site: nine settlement levels span thousands of years, and the famous walls belong to different periods. The wooden horse near the entrance is modern, but the site museum explains the finds and the legend. Allow two to three hours and combine it with the Dardanelles.
