Overview

UNESCO sites and what they mean

Ani was a medieval Armenian capital on the Kars plain, with churches, caravanserais and a defensive wall facing the river gorge. Its emptiness is part of the experience: a city that once held trade and prayer now holds wind and stone.

Ani stands on a high plateau beside the closed Armenian border, a walled city of churches, caravanserais and fortifications. The Cathedral of Ani and the Church of the Redeemer are the most striking monuments, but the empty streets and the gorge views are part of the experience. Bring wind protection and check the current access rules.
