St. Nicholas Church

The Church of St Nicholas in Demre is a plain Byzantine church with later additions, built around the memory of the bishop who became Santa Claus. Its mosaics, tomb and layered architecture make it a worthwhile stop beside Myra.

About this stop

St. Nicholas Church

Nicholas was bishop of Myra in the 4th century. His reputation for generosity travelled across Europe and eventually became the Santa Claus tradition. The church was rebuilt in the Byzantine period, and later additions reflect the site's long international history.

Inside, look for the mosaic floor, the marble tomb and the side chapels. The building is smaller and quieter than Myra, but the story gives the surrounding ruins a human scale. Combine it with the rock tombs and theatre for a full Demre day.
